Before a watch ships, we open it up, check the gear train, regulate the balance wheel and pressure-test the case. An automatic's rotor winds the mainspring as your wrist moves; wear it for a day and it runs for around 40 hours off the wrist.

Measure your wrist with a soft tape. Under 16 cm, a 36–38 mm case sits best; 16–18 cm suits 39–41 mm; above 18 cm, try 42 mm and up. The lugs should never overhang the edge of your wrist.
